“He kumu lehua muimuia i ka manu” — A lehua tree in bloom attracts birds — is the inspiration for the name and motto of Hālau Hula Ka Lehua Maukele.
Kumu Hula Lehua Hawkins, a native Hawaiian raised in Southern California, who proudly traces her Hawaiian ancestry to Keauhou and Honaunau on Hawaii Island. Her hula journey began under the guidance of Tani Marsh and Kathy Jones. As she matured, she dedicated 20 years of formal studying with Kumu Hula Rolanda Valentin-Reese. In 2010, Lehua earned the title of Kumu through the ‘uniki ceremony, under the watchful eye by Master Kumu Hula Mae Kamāmalu Klein.
